Hey you beautiful souls! Thank you so much for taking time out to to stop by today; truly means a lot. Today we are celebrating something Special!!! It’s our Anniversary!!
You don’t hear of many millennials these days who have made it to ten years, yet alone five in marriages. It’s always a blessing to see and hear of those marriages that have lasted 20,25, 40, and even 50+ years. That’s the type of marriage I’m looking to have, and being an example for my baby girl. Marriage is a blessing, and when done the right way can withstand any storm. Marriage takes work, and you put in work for what you love.
Ten years ago this day it was cold and raining as we pulled up to the Cobb County Magistrate Courts office. I was two months pregnant with my precious daughter, filled with so many emotions. My soon-to-be husbands aunt and little cousin would be our only witnesses for our special night. As a little girl you dream of the day you marry your prince. You spend time thinking about that perfect dress, what colors, the perfect place, and everything that would make that day perfect. Never did I imagine it would take place at the Justice of the Peace. Most people would be ashamed to mention that, but God had something different in mind. The most beautiful things in life are sometimes hidden, and out of the norm of how you may think it should happen. I’m so glad that we made the choice first to do it this way. Later on in December we would have a ceremony in front of family and friends, who think our anniversary is that day (we have 2, lol).
Going into this marriage the only example I could go on was my grandparents. At the time they had been married for 40+ years, soon after my grandmother would pass away. There was no marriage counseling (which I highly recommend), and no advice from anyone on what to do. It literally has been trail and error. My father wasn’t really around to show or give me the love that I needed. My stepfather still didn’t provide that fatherly love I longed for. Matter of fact love was rarely mentioned in our home. How was I suppose to love my husband like a wife should, when I didn’t have any idea what real love felt like? Needless to say, my husband has been the best thing (besides my daughter) that has happened to me. He has taught me how to love, and pushes me way beyond my comfort zone. Despite everything we’ve gone through, these ten years have made us stronger.
Each individual have their ideas of what marriage is suppose to be like (lol, disaster). Clearly we had different ideas. After years of failed attempts we finally decided to do it the “Right Way”. That way being God’s way. We needed a fresh start. Slowly but surely things were turning around for us. Where I once saw flaws, he saw beauty. When I wanted to shut down, he didn’t allow it. Every day was a struggle for me, because being comfortable was what I liked. Even when it feels like I’m not giving my best, he gives me confirmation that I’m doing great. I love that about him; he knows what it takes to keep me going.
I love that he wants me to be better than the day before. Each day I’m learning what it truly means to have a Godly marriage. He’s such a caring and giving man. There’s not a thing he wouldn’t do for his love ones. He’s a godly example of what a man should be, and everyday he continues to surprise me. Never did I imagine that I would be married 10 years, or even find that prince that would love me forever.
This past week we got to experience international travel for the first time. We didn’t have a Honeymoon at the time, due to circumstances. This made up for the Honeymoon and Anniversary. There is no one else in this world I would want to experience life with than my handsome husband. I love him with everything that’s in me! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY BABY!!
Some things I’ve learned along the way of this thing called marriage:
It takes Commitment
You have to Compromise
Communication is key
Respect each other
It takes two
Talk with other couples who have been married a long time
Have date nights
Let go (get out of your comfort zone)
